It’s time for more action! Although you haven’t heard much from me yet, I’ve been working on this blog for almost two months. Behind the scene. Like an undercover agent. I’m now ready to really jump in and start building my own brand! I know that many bloggers share that exact same goal. The problem is, we want it now! But Rome was not built in one day.
Many experts recommend to be as authentic as possible. They argue that when we are pretending, it usually smells. For many, being ourselves is itself a challenge since we don’t exactly know who we are, what we want, and what we are capable of (for others, being themselves is itself a challenge simply because they’re… phony… Oops, I said it.)
1. If you did not fear what other people think of you, what would you work on?
2. What project makes you lose track of time?
3. How would you like to be remembered?
In my case for instance, my brand is my content and myself. It’s a little bit like art. It’s nice to know that people appreciate your paintings. It’s even better to know that they want to buy it. I need to craft my “work of art” with that objective in mind. You want people not only to like it, but to be willing to pay for it!
If you really want to make sure you offer quality content, you might ask yourself some questions.
Promoting Your Brand
I like to divide up brand promotion into two categories: advertising and relationship. I tend to compare advertising to somebody screaming in the crowd. People pay attention for a while because of the noise. The effect is instantaneous, but it doesn’t last.
With a relationship, you don’t need to scream. You have a conversation. And if you follow Carnegie’s advice and are a good listener, people will enjoy that conversation. Obviously, promoting your brand through relationships will take much longer, but the effect will be long lasting.
I’m not saying you should rule out advertising. But the pay back won’t be as interesting as investing in developing a strong community of friends and partners who will spread the word. Not because you pay them, but because they appreciate your work and value their relationship with you. In a way, they will contribute to building your brand. Social media can help you do that, but don’t forget that there’s also a real world out there.
Start now
Now is time to stop theorizing and start working on creating your brand. I tend to agree with Mark McGuinness who says that we must forget about ‘being creative’ and rather start creating.
Figure out who you are, make sure you provide value, and build strong and meaningful relationships. You can build Rome. Action is key. Start now!
