Jesus was a marketing specialist (Note: this is an article about blogging not religion). He had a message to convey and wanted people to listen. Since Twitter or TV didn’t exist 2,000 years ago, he had to be very creative.
He chose to give speeches in public spaces to reach as many people as possible. Since you can reach so many readers and personalize your message with a blog, I bet he would have been a blogger had he lived today.
Since we are still talking about him 2,000 years later, we can safely affirm that he had a few tricks to catch the attention of his audience. Here are some of them you could use yourself.
1) Using Parables or the Art of Story Telling
Jesus told stories (or parables) to people in order to share his message. Stories are compelling, easy to understand and easy to remember. They are far more effective to convey a message than using complicated concepts.
For instance, recounting the story of a poor single mother who managed to get out of poverty by borrowing money from a microcredit institution will get you farther then try to explain the whole concept of microcredit and borrowing without collateral. Using stories makes it more real, more lively, and more interesting.
You will find great tips on how to use story telling in Made to Stick.
2) Get Disciples to Spread to Word
At first, Jesus’ disciples followed and learned from him. They were students interested in his stories and his message. The interesting part (the part that you want to remember) came after. The students became teachers themselves and rapidly started to spread the message.
This model can be replicated with blogging. Developing a strong base of engaged readers (I don’t suggest calling them disciples because it might get to your head) can be quite useful. You could see them as your 1,000 true fans. They will buy your products and avidly read your articles. But most importantly, they may add your blog to their blogroll or start promoting your articles through reviews, recommendations, etc.
Word of mouth remains a powerful way to attract readers. Jesus did it. You can do it.
But to get there, I believe you have to follow his third lesson.
3) Be Nice to Others
“Don’t do unto others what you don’t want done unto you.” That says it all. I see the blogosphere as a community of like-minded people. We don’t talk about the same things. We don’t have to agree on everything either. But there’s a way to make comments and act as a responsible community member. Being constructive is one of the secrets.
Following that rule will bring you far. This applies to your blog as well as all the other facets of your life. This does not mean being hypocrite. Rather, it means being authentic and sincere.
The Ultimate Trick to Radically Increase Traffic on Your Blog
There’s one last Jesus’ trick that could send traffic on your blog to the roof! Jesus used it a few times to catch his audience’s attention. He did not relied overly on it since it would have diluted the impact of his message in the long run. Obviously, this is not a trick suitable for all bloggers. You must really have the talent and the energy.
So what’s the trick? Basically, if you can work a few miracles, (like walking on water) I guarantee you will increase your ranking and the numbers of followers readers in an instant!
