I know it’s hard. We all want to live in certainty. Yet, I truly believe that the pain is worth it. Article after article, you have to keep on questioning yourself. Is my messaging clear enough? Am I really meeting the needs of my readers? Am I adding any value?

Although these are not always easy (or fun) questions to ask yourselves on a consistent basis, there are many benefits to doing so.

It keeps you focused on your objectives
It is surprising how often we forget about our objectives while developing the content of our blog. Your new post often builds on the idea you had in the previous one, and this process unintentionally brings you in a certain direction. Once you’ve written five or ten blog posts, you may have seriously drifted away. Questioning your work will help you prevent that.

It forces you to be creative
It’s quite easy to repeat something you’ve just read on another blog or in the news. It’s another story to come up with original material. Questioning the value of your content, as you produce it, will increase the possibility of generating innovative and useful content.

An easier option would be to follow Lisa Barone’s advice and not write when you don’t have anything to say. But well… for some people, that would sadly mean never writing again…

It makes you think about your audience’s needs
One of the first rules in communications is to know your audience and its needs (your target audience if your are just starting out). You can’t meet people’s needs if you don’t know what they are looking for. So be attentive to comments left on other blogs and questions asked in forums. Your articles should provide a solution to these comments or an answer to these questions.

The 4 questions that you should always ask yourself when writing a new blog post
  1. Will this blog post contribute to achieving my objectives or fulfill my mission?
  2. What do I want to accomplish?
  3. Am I meeting the needs of my audience?
  4. Am I adding any value to the blogosphere?

If you keep these questions in mind, you will not only improve the content of your blog, you will improve the quality of any other content you have to create, whether it’s for a speech, a presentation, an interview, etc.

Most importantly, you have to keep on asking yourself why you are writing in the first place. This is crucial for the progress of your blog and the progress of any other online projects you may have. Think about Nietzsche’s words, “He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how.”
